What is an HVLP sprayer?
An HVLP (high volume low pressure) sprayer is spray equipment that delivers paint or stain using high air volume at low pressure, producing a fine mist with minimal overspray and waste.
HVLP stands for high volume low pressure. The sprayer uses a compressor or turbine to push large amounts of air at relatively low pressure (typically 10 PSI or less at the cap) through a small opening. This creates a soft, controlled mist rather than a forceful jet.
The appeal for cabinet refinishing shops and finish carpenters is straightforward. HVLP equipment lays paint and stain smoothly with minimal bounce-back and overspray. The low-pressure design means the atomized coating doesn't hit the surface with force, which reduces rippling, runs, and the need for heavy sanding between coats. Rollers can leave stipple and lap marks, while airless sprayers (which operate at 2,000 PSI or higher) generate excessive mist and require extensive masking and ventilation.
HVLP sprayers excel at factory-like finishes on cabinet doors, trim, and detailed woodwork. The trade-off is speed. HVLP guns apply material slower than airless equipment, so they work best for precision work rather than large commercial projects. Gravity-fed cups and side-cup designs are common in Bridgeport shops because they reduce fatigue during hand-held application and keep material visible during work.
