Cabinet refinishing and repainting is the middle path between living with tired cabinets and paying for a full kitchen remodel. Instead of tearing out boxes and doors, a painter strips or scuff-sands the existing surfaces, fills dings and grain, sprays or brushes on primer and a durable topcoat (usually a waterborne alkyd or lacquer), and reinstalls hardware. Done right, it can make oak or dated laminate cabinets look close to factory-new for a fraction of a replacement's cost. Done wrong, you get drips, chipped edges within a year, and doors that stick because the paint never cured properly.
