Pressure washing and prep work is the part of a paint job that decides whether the finish lasts three years or ten. In Stamford, that means dealing with the coastal humidity and salt air off the Sound, plus the mildew, pollen, and grime that build up on siding, decks, and masonry through the year. Before a single coat goes on, a good crew washes the surface, scrapes and sands loose or peeling paint, spot-primes bare wood, caulks gaps around trim and windows, and fixes any wood rot or masonry cracks that would trap moisture under new paint. Skip this stage or rush it, and even premium paint will bubble, peel, or mildew again within a season or two.
What to look for in a prep contractor
The 21 businesses listed in this category range from dedicated pressure washing outfits to painting companies that handle their own prep in-house. When comparing them, ask what PSI settings and detergents they use on different surfaces (vinyl, wood, brick, and stucco all need different treatment), whether they soft-wash instead of blasting older or painted wood, and whether prep work is quoted separately or bundled into a full paint job. Get specifics on how they handle rot repair, lead paint (common in Stamford's older housing stock, especially pre-1978 homes), and disposal of paint chips and wash runoff.
How our scoring helps
We rank these 21 businesses using verified review data, response patterns, and consistency of work over time rather than star ratings alone, so you can see which contractors reliably deliver thorough prep instead of a quick rinse.
