Commercial painting covers the interior and exterior work done on office buildings, retail spaces, restaurants, warehouses, medical offices, multi-family properties, and other buildings used for business rather than a single-family home. In Stamford that spans everything from repainting a downtown storefront between tenants to coating a warehouse ceiling in the industrial corridor near the rail yard, to refreshing common areas in a South End office building without shutting down operations. We track 34 commercial painting businesses serving the Stamford area, ranging from small crews that handle a few storefronts a month to larger outfits that run multi-building contracts for property managers.
The work itself usually breaks down into surface prep (patching, sanding, pressure washing, priming bare or damaged substrate), the actual coating (often specified by a property manager or architect for sheen, color, and durability), and cleanup that gets a space back in use fast. Commercial jobs also carry different demands than residential ones: crews often work nights or weekends to avoid disrupting a business, they need to carry commercial general liability insurance at higher limits, and larger jobs may require lift or scaffold work, lead-safe practices on older buildings, or coordination with a facilities team.
What to check before you hire
- Proof of commercial liability insurance and workers' comp, not just a residential policy
- Experience with your building type (retail, office, industrial, multi-family) and similar-scale jobs
- A written scope that specifies prep work, number of coats, paint brand and product line, and timeline
- Whether they can work off-hours or in phases to keep your business open
- References from other Stamford property managers or business owners, not just homeowners
